He emphasized the crucial role of constant vigilance, as large breakaway groups constantly attempted to gain an advantage. "I’m super proud of how the team raced all day," he shared. "They put us under pressure from the start. There were very strong teams, Ineos and Red Bull, trying to make their moves, and trying to always have guys out front to put us under pressure. Thanks to my teammates today, we controlled it perfectly."
As the hours ticked by and the race neared its climax, the drama intensified around 40 km from the finish, on the first ascent of the Alto de Malhão. This climb, a demanding 2.6 km at a steep 9% gradient, saw four riders from an earlier breakaway still holding a lead of about 90 seconds. It was here that Almeida made his move, testing his rivals on the most challenging sections, which peaked between 10% and 16%. However, he was closely monitored by Ayuso and the impressive Paul Seixas, the winner of stage 2.
Shortly after, Ineos Grenadiers took control of the pace, and Florian Lipowitz of Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe launched a powerful solo attack. This bold move prompted a swift reaction from Kévin Vauquelin of Ineos Grenadiers, setting the stage for a thrilling chase.
