Amir, a former Pakistani fast bowler, faced backlash for his remarks about the Indian cricket team during the T20 World Cup 2026. He specifically criticized Abhishek Sharma, a young Indian batsman, for his playing style, calling him a 'slogger'. Amir's comments also predicted that India would not advance to the semifinals, a bold statement that drew further criticism.
In an interview on the 'Haarna Mana Hai' show, Amir defended his comments, asserting that he was merely expressing his opinion without resorting to foul language. He emphasized the importance of respecting different viewpoints, contrasting his approach with the alleged abusive language used by some former Indian players towards Pakistan.
"I shared my opinion, and we've always praised India when they perform well," Amir explained. "I've said this before; everyone should respect each other's opinions. When I compare the language used by some former Indian players to ours, it's clear who is more respectful. Can you tell me one instance where I used bad language against India?" he challenged.
Regarding Sharma, Amir clarified that he was commenting on the player's inability to defend his position effectively. "Abhishek, I mentioned he lacks a strong defensive game. If a player can't stop the ball, what else can I say?" he asked, seeking a more appropriate term.
Amir also addressed his prediction about India's semifinal elimination, explaining that he was speaking from the perspective of a pundit with a deep understanding of the game, drawing comparisons to the performances of South Africa and the West Indies.
"In cricket, not everyone can share the same opinion," Amir stated, advocating for mutual respect. "We've played the sport, so we know its intricacies. When I compare India and South Africa's performances, I believe South Africa is ahead. I was simply expressing my opinion from that standpoint," he concluded.
