Eli Lilly’s experimental weight-loss shot, retatrutide, has delivered unprecedented results in a late-stage study, offering more dramatic weight loss than existing GLP-1 medications. According to the company, participants who took doses of 9 mg, 12 mg, and 4 mg saw an average weight loss of 64–70 pounds (26–28%) over 80 weeks, nearly matching the outcomes of weight-loss surgery. While the study did not receive peer review, Lilly expects approval this year, potentially joining a growing market of weight-loss treatments including Zepbound and Foundayo. The drug’s unique mechanism involves a triple-hormone agonist combination—GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon—that mimics the body’s natural metabolic signals, offering a novel approach to weight management.
