The British Museum's Successful Fundraising Effort: Securing a Historical Pendant Linked to Henry VIII

The British Museum has successfully raised £3.5 million to acquire a 16th-century gold pendant, known as the Tudor Heart, which was discovered in Warwickshire in 2019. This remarkable fundraising campaign aimed to prevent the pendant from entering a private collection and ensure its place in the museum's collection.

The pendant, a 24-carat gold artifact, is believed to have been created for a significant event in 1518, marking the betrothal of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon's daughter, Princess Mary (later Mary I), to the French heir apparent. It is one of the few remaining objects celebrating Henry and Catherine's relationship, as Henry VIII often commissioned London goldsmiths for costume jewelry for major celebrations.

The campaign attracted over 45,000 public contributions, with The National Heritage Memorial Fund contributing £1.75 million. Other notable donors included The Julia Rausing Trust (£500,000), the Art Fund (£400,000), and The American Friends of the British Museum (£300,000).

British Museum Director Nicholas Cullinan expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the pendant's historical significance. He stated that the campaign's success highlights the power of history to inspire and why such artifacts belong in museums. The Tudor Heart, now on display in the museum's gallery, is expected to become a formal part of the collection later this year, offering visitors a glimpse into a lesser-known yet captivating chapter of English history.
